My Take: How To Get Into Photography

I was recently asked, "I'm just getting into photography, how can I really get the most out of it?" Below is my answer to that question, which is really my progression and how I delved more deeply into photography. One thing to remember while reading the rest of this post is to realize that it takes time to produce truly good photographs, from the learning of techniques, to setting up and taking the photos, and finally to editing.

First Attempt At Layering

In photography, many times photographers are faced with a choice: either they can choose their settings to focus on the foreground or on the background. The problem is that the choice will leave either some part of the picture washed out or silhouetted. With layering, a photographer can get the best of both worlds. Using the instructions from Digital Photography School and How To: HDR Photography, I tried my hand at layering 2 photos I took the other night.


I would like to say up front that its not the best example of layering, but it is my first attempt. I also was taking the pictures from my car, so I did not have a tripod to stabilize my camera. So please forgive any mistakes you find in the finished photograph.

Welcome to Random Photos #5: Fall Edition! This past week I was in North Carolina with my family, staying at a friend's cabin. The weather was beautiful and the changing colors were gorgeous! I got used to it real quickly and was quite sad when we had to leave at the end of the week. However, I took pictures!

Color Isolation

There are different ways of drawing the attention to different subjects in a picture. Color isolation is one of these techniques. I recently decided to try my hand quickly and the result was not all that bad. Below is the original picture:

Random Photographs # 1

I dedicate this post and subsequent posts to those pictures that do not quite make it to 500px, Flickr, or even Facebook. These are the photos that I have taken while out and about and have decided not to use, which is a shame. I tend to keep a relatively high standard for myself and that is why a number of pictures never see the light of day. Without further ado, photos that I have never posted anywhere else because I did not deem them worthy:

Clouds

I love clouds. I have this new found fascination with them. Lately I've been taking a lot of cloud pictures, so instead of spamming my facebook wall with cloud pictures, I'm going to put them here. These were all taken the same day, while I was driving to a friend's house.

Change of Style

I've made a decision. *cue drumroll* I'm changing the watermark I put on my pictures. What? Were you expecting something more exciting then that? Well, sorry to disappoint. It was a big decision for me. Here's what my watermark looked like before:

Review of 500px

Let me begin with saying that I've only been taking pictures for just over a year now. I've learned many new things and have met many new people in that short time, all through this hobby of mine. As I began last year, I wanted a place to post my pictures, where others could view, like, and comment on my photography. A friend suggested Flickr and off I went to create an account. For over a year I posted pictures to Flickr regularly and participated in groups. I even created a Facebook page, where I linked my Flickr pictures after uploading them. However, I wanted to find a new area to explore in the photography sharing world. Flickr was nice, but I needed something different. That's when I found 500px.

Nightlife

While out on a "photo walk" (what my friend and I call what we do when we go out to take pictures) with my friend, across the street was a bar. With the neons in the window and the lights from outside, it had a very neat look to it. Obviously I felt the need to take a picture because.. well, there it is.
